Meet Patrick, 2020 Scholar
Our College Scholars receive a financial scholarship to help with academic expenses. Each Scholar commits to undertaking a volunteer project of their choosing related to childhood cancer advocacy, with support and mentorship from the Children's Cancer Cause team.
Patrick is a seven-time cancer survivor!
The Kentucky native was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was five years old. After three experimental clinical trials and six relapses, Patrick received a second bone marrow transplant in May 2018.
”Since then I have remained cancer-free, but I have dealt with numerous side effects,” Patrick wrote to us in his application. “My survival has not come without significant cost to my future health. This shouldn’t be the case and I want people to understand that the fight isn’t over once you’re declared cancer-free. A battle with cancer leaves life-long survivorship issues.”
Patrick graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor's in Nursing (RN).
“I want to give survivors the awareness to deal with anything they are facing or may face in the future, so that they are prepared and know how to navigate these issues.”
