Meet Morgan: 2023 Gold Scholar

Our College Scholars receive a financial scholarship to help with academic expenses, and each scholar commits to undertaking a volunteer project of their choosing related to childhood cancer advocacy, with support and mentorship from the Children's Cancer Cause team.

Morgan’s Story

Morgan, a native of Portage, Wisconsin, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when she was six years old.

“I mostly remember the good parts, because I was so young and my doctors and nurses did an amazing job of bringing joy and happiness to me when I was in the hospital,” says Morgan. “I also remember my entire community rallying around me and supporting myself and my family through and after my fight.”

The chemotherapy that successfully treated her cancer caused a blood clot in her brain and degraded the muscles in her calves, leaving her with chronic leg pain.

Today she’s studying biology at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin. She has experience in a medical research lab, and she’s an active volunteer with a number of cancer nonprofits and campus groups.

She hopes to go on to graduate school to earn a degree in cancer cell biology. “Eventually I’d like to work in a lab or clinic setting with patients to help find better cancer treatments.”

I have dreamed since I was a child that I would become an oncologist and help people - just like my doctors helped me.

Morgan’s Advocacy Project

Morgan is writing an inspirational children’s book about her battle with cancer.

“I’m hoping to bring to light an optimistic view of cancer and the good that it can bring,” Morgan told us. “I hope that this book can serve as a light for others in some of the darkest times of their lives. I hope it brings hope to see a cancer survivor moving forward in life, healthy after treatment, and planning to become an oncologist and help patients just like me.”
